- Note about this site from Karl Smelker -
The site lists Cajun and Zydeco resources in the Upper Midwest area. We list dances, festivals, bands, radio shows, and newsletters from the Upper Midwest. We're based in Minneapolis/Saint Paul so we focus on the
Twin Cities but list items as far away as Fitzgerald's in Chicago, the Wheatland festivals in Michigan, and various festivals in Iowa and the Dakotas.
We provide web space for various local bands such as the Bone Tones, the New Riverside Ramblers and the Swamp Sextet. ( I play bass with the Swamp Sextet).
We also publish the Web version of the Cajun Spotlight from the folks at Notes and Steps. Our archive of the Cajun Spotlight goes back to November of 1995.
The site also hosts the Louisiana Rhythms radio show page. Louisiana Rhythms plays Cajun and Zydeco, with a little Swamp Pop and Blues thrown in. Louisiana Rhythms can heard on Fridays, from 9 to 11 am, over local radio station KFAI-FM at 90.3 and 106.7 FM. The show is also available worldwide at http://www.kfai.org via streaming audio. The page also lists a schedule of upcoming shows and topics and an archive of playlists from past shows. Recent highlights include interviews with Sonny Landreth, Horace Trahan, and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. I'm one of the programmers along with Eric Mohring of the Bone Tones and Millie Ortego.
- Maurine McCort
- E-mail: Maurine.McCort -at- co.hennepin.mn.us
- Maurine McCort is an inspiring force in the Cajun and zydeco dance scene in the Twin Cities (Mpls./St.Paul). Her passion for the music and dance comes from the people in southern Louisiana who keep it alive. She has taught at dance camps as well as teaching weekly classes in the Twin Cities since 1991. She frequently visits Louisiana to keep up with the latest music and dance steps. She plays guitar with the Bone Tones and books local bands for the Sunday Night Social Dances at the Half Time Rec. in St. Paul. Maurine is a founding member of the Krewe de Walleye, an organization that is bringing Louisiana bands upriver to Minnesota. If you find yourself in the Twin Cities, e-mail her to get the current events.

- From Garry Kaluzny (3/15/01):
- "Hello! Just wanted you know about our Cajun/Zydeco
music and dance events in Ann Arbor, MI. We have CZ
dances at the Pittsfield Grange Hall on the (usually)
3rd Friday of each month. We also have CZ jams at the
same location on the (usually) 1st and 3rd Saturdays.
Besides my local CZ band, Maison Bleue, I'm trying to
hire other bands to come and play at my dances. We've
had between 50 and 70 people at our first three
dances; our next dance is this Friday, March 16. We
have dance lessons at 7pm, taught by Allons Danser!
(Kristin Dziczek and friends), and then live music
starts at 8pm.
Our web site is Garry Kaluzny's Cajun/Zydeco Page. I also have a
link to Kristin's Zydeco Calendar where she keeps info
on anything CZ in and around Michigan. There's also a link on my page to our CZ photo archive on Yahoo!"
